A Genealogy of the Knight Family

by John Crawford Hodgson

This handwritten genealogy of the Knight family is attributed to John Crawford Hodgson. This genealogy is not complete, nor is it without error. Hodgson seems unsure of the parents of William Henry Knight (father of the Rev. Thomas Knight). He indicates that his name is William, but surrounds this by ellipses (...William...). We believe that the father of William Henry Knight was Thomas Knight. It may be that it was Thomas William or William Thomas, but William Henry Knight's baptismal record shows his father as Thomas.
Hodgson lists only two children of William Henry Knight and Jane Young. See:The Ancestors of the Rev. Thomas Knight to view what we believe to be the complete record of the siblings of William Henry Knight.

My intent in this document is not to correct errors nor complete the list of descendents, but rather, to the best of my ability, provide a transcript of what Hodgson has recorded. Special thanks to Lilian Caley and Valerie Edwards for their contributions to deciphering the (at times) unreadable handwriting of the author.

This document is available from the Newcastle Upon Tyne City Libraries, and is a part of a twelve volume set catalogued as: Hodgson, John Crawford Manuscript Pedigrees of Families in Northumberland and Durham (12 vols.) The copy we worked from was in the possession of Douglas Knight Gregson (son of William Clarence Knight Gregson and great grandson of Henry Knight Gregson).

Each of the two pages below is a link to a larger image; unfortunately the handwriting of the larger page view is often small and illegible. When you open the link to one of the pages shown below, you will see that it contains outlined regions which are shaded a light yellow. Each of these is a link to a magnified image of a part of the page. Below that magnified image is our best attempt at a transcription of the script. Red ?? indicate an undecipherable word or phrase. At times the lines indicating descendents are a bit difficult to read in the fragmented document, so we have added parental information even if it does not appear in that particular snippet of the document. Finally, clarifications have been added between square brackets [ ]; these words may not be a direct transcription of the document.

On the top right hand side of page two of the Hodgson manuscript is a list of citations that support the author's research. In our transcriptions I have surrounded the reference by square brackets.
