Knight Gregson Pages

Most of the genealogy resources for my Knight Gregson family are found at: http://knightgregson.forumotion.com

I am contemplating transferring most of these resources to this website, but it may be a while before that happens. For the time being, however, this site will host my Knight Gregson manuscript.

Knight Gregson Book Cover

The Knight Gregson family is a branch of the English Gregson family. In this book I trace the Gregsons back to John Gregson of Murton who was born in 1537. The emergence of the Gregson family is likely rooted in the Norman conquest of England by William the Conquerer in 1066. The Knight Gregson branch of the family was created when, in 1831, Henry Knight inherited the Gregson family estate Lowlynn from his cousin Anthony Gregson.

Download from the iBooks Store

This book is available as a free download on the iBooks Store. If you have an iPad, go to the iBooks application and go to the iBooks Store by selecting one of the icons at the bottom of the screen (like Featured). In the search window enter Knight Gregson. There is no need to download a preview as the iBook is free. You can also download an iBooks app for any OSX device, and access the manuscript in a similar manner.

Using the iBooks version, you get a fully functional multitouch book. For example, each of the references is hot linked within the text. If you click on one of these references, a new window will open with your internet browser and the linked material will be displayed. There is also a Gallery of pictures in the multitouch book that will allow you to leaf through an album of pictures of the family estate Lowlynn.

I don't know if there are apps for Kindle or Android devices that suport iBooks. Please let me know if you have any information regarding this. (there are apps to read Kindle books and other ebooks on the iPad)

pdf version of Knight Gregson

I have postesd a pdf version of the manuscript here. This is an option if you cannot access the multitouch iBook. A pdf document can be opened using (1) an internet browser, or (2) a pdf reader. If you click on the link to access the manuscript, the way the file opens depends on the configuration of your browser. I have my browser configured to open pdfs in my Safari Browser (OSX). However, once I have opened it, I have the option to view it in a pdf viewer (in my case Preview on the Mac). If you are viewing the pdf version of the manuscript and have the option, view the file using a pdf viewer (e.g. Acrobat Reader or Preview). If you are able to do this, web links embedded in the text will open a window to your browser. When you are finished viewing the on-line resource, simply close the browser window.

If you open the pdf file directly in a web browser, everything works fine until you try to open a link to a web resource. A link will open in the same window (or tab) in which you are viewing the pdf. If you use the back button on your browser, you will NOT RETURN TO THE PAGE YOU LEFT WHEN YOU ACTIVATED THE LINK. You will return to the beginning of the book. This can be (to say the least) distracting. This is not an easy fix, as the underpinning models of pdf documents and html pages are different.

If you simply want to open the manuscript in your web browser and also want to to use the links, I provide you with an alternative (not optimum but useable) solution. Along with the link to the manuscript I have included a link to the list of references in the book. Open this second pdf in another browser window or tab. When you see a link you want to explore instead of opening it in the manuscript, click on the bracketed number in the references pdf. The same issue with using the BACK button on your browser, but now there are fewer pages to go through.

The BEST solution is to use the iBooks version if you have iBooks or find an iBooks compatible app for your device. Not only will you avoid problems with accessing links, you will be able to use the other interactive features of the iBook.
